What Have I missed in the Supermarkets?

I’ve been unwell.  This has had an impact in that I haven’t been able to get to my little shops….. food was running low in some categories, fresh veg, bread….. so I took myself off to the local supermarket with great reluctance and bought all I needed.  And a few other things.  How is it that I really like my new way of shopping and eating, but the second I step back into a supermarket I succumb to all the old bad ways?  I wander the aisles aimlessly (again) and put things in my basket that I didn’t come in for (again) and pick up those too good to resist offers and bargains (again) and spend double what I had planned (again).  No one chats to me, no one discusses the cheese, the farms things came from, the origin of the wheat, no one remembers me from my last shop.  I haven’t missed this invisible factory shopping.  But, I confess, I had forgotten that I liked the reduced goodies, and the array of veggie products.

So, has there been anything else I’ve missed?  Well, at times it would be oh so convenient to just pop in, but it’s proved that I overspend when I do.  Maybe the extent of goods is wider than in small local, but then the quality and freshness of small local is, in my opinion, unbeatable.  Maybe one thing I miss at the moment is the bakery section as I have yet to find a good local baker; not the bread, but the cakes, the rolls, the muffins, the choice.  From the Deli I get the most amazing Brownies, but I’d like the choice of an éclair now and again, or maybe a cream apple turnover.  So I think it’s time to seriously research bakeries.

On Sunday we went to our local Farmers Market, and amongst our usual favourite guys was a new stall – the Happy Carrot.  They sold most excellent veggie pies and burgers.  Only slight downside was that they did not have a card to offer me, and no website details.  Lack of advertising guys!  Also bought lovely fresh samosas and eggs from nearby stalls.

I have baked.  Mainly biscuits.  And meals.  But I’m getting there, trying out a few new recipes, and borrowing even more cookbooks from the library, so I get points for Intention.

Meanwhile on the dodgy food news front – apparently the latest Headline with exclamations is that 50,000 tons of beef have been recalled by the Dutch due to fear of contamination (horse/bute style).  Most everything has already been said on this front, so all I want to add is…….. 50,000 tons!!!  That is a mighty lot of cows my friend. Even a mighty lot of horses.  One way or another how many animals are we eating?
